Madeira Scene Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre. Hike to the summit of Pico Ruivo and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds. Unwind over a glass of Madeira wine, an historic fortified beverage that’s musky and subtly sweet.

Climate: The island of Madeira has a very mild climate, which can be considered as eternal spring. The north-east trade winds, which prevail throughout the year, bring a bit of cloudiness, humidity, and rainfall on the north-facing slopes. In the cold half of the year, the island can be affected by Atlantic depressions. Daytime temperatures hover around 19/20°C from December to April, and exceed 20°C between May and November, reaching 26°C in August and September. From June to September, Madeira can be affected by the Leste, a hot, dry wind blowing from the Sahara, which can raise the temperature above 30°C and bring a fine red powder. Rainfall is concentrated in the period from October to mid-April, when it's quite frequent, while in summer it almost never rains. The amount of sunshine is acceptable in winter, and good (but not great) in the summer months. In June, a blanket of clouds, called the capacete (the helmet) often forms in the early morning but thins out during the day. However, even in midsummer, cloud banks can form on the Atlantic Ocean and affect the suncshine, even if it does not rain. The island of Madeira is occupied by mountains, whose highest point is Pico Ruivo at over 6,000 feet. These mountains and the trade winds produce a variety of microclimates. The northern side is rainier and windier than the more arid southern one. The city of Funchal, on the southern slope, is quite sheltered from the wind. The interior, which is hilly and mountainous, can be covered by a layer of fog or low clouds. In the mountains, especially above 5,000 feet, snowfall and frost can occur in winter.
